Senior Controls Engineer - Metals / Rolling Mill Applications

The Senior Controls Engineer - Metals / Rolling Mill Applications is an experienced role with specialized skills needed to design an entire system and manage a project within an industry domain from start to finish with minimal oversight. In the metals industries, systems will involve configuration and design of complex drive systems, mill master control, Inter-stand tension control, Automatic Gauge Control (AGC), Hydraulic Gap Control (HGC), and Automatic Flatness Control (AFC). Other metals projects would also include casters, slitters, pickling lines, etc.. Project management, controls system design and operating knowledge of cold and hot mills are key components of the job. The Senior Controls Engineer will execute a single large project and/or work on multiple smaller projects to a specific timeline and budget. Coordinating and managing other Engineering and Technician resources assigned to project, as well as maintaining excellent client communications throughout the project will be important for success in this role.
Drive System Configuration and Design
- Successful configuration and design of complex drive systems in the metals industries, typically rolling mills, caster, slitters, pickling lines, etc..

- Work with sales and proposal team to ensure appropriate equipment is purchased to meet the applications specifics.
(10% of time will be spent in this area)
- Specify and select the key components of a drive system. Work with drafting and panel fabrication team to ensure appropriate panel layout and construction.
(10% of time will be spent in this area)
- Assist in the commissioning of the designed control system(s).
(15% of time will be spent in this area)
- Coordinates with other control engineers or in some cases will be the primary engineer for PLC programming and HMI requirements for the system.
(10% of time will be spent in this area.)
- Working with clients to ensure successful completion of projects. Resolve on-site issues in a timely and professional manner.
(5% of time will be spent in this area)
Minimum 4 Year Undergrad Degree in EE/ME/ChE.
Strong drive application and continuous process control experience, including experience in the application and retrofitting of large variable speed drives.
Ability to design, implement, and troubleshoot industrial process control systems involving PLC programming and program troubleshooting, HMI applications (software and development), PID control loops, analog and digital controls of web process applications.
Enjoys working in a fast paced environment with a multi-disciplined Engineering team, and be capable of managing multiple projects at one time.
Familiarity with automation equipment and knowledge of PLC programming for Rockwell Automation/ Allen Bradley ControlLogix family.
A deep understanding of metals processes: typically rolling mills, hot and cold, casters, cutoffs, levelers, paint lines, metal process lines in both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Solid understanding of electrical and mechanical systems.
Experience with pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
The ability to effectively communicate recommendations and requirements to the customer.
At least 15 years of post-graduate industry experience in a metals facility or servicing one for a major electrical vendor.
Design experience of electrical systems and power distribution for industrial processes. Familiarity with electrical motors and AC/DC circuits, knowledge of the NEC, commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the Electrical Engineering field.
Experience with rolling mill models.
Experience with furnaces and/or burners.
Experience with industrial networks.
Experience with other PLC platforms such as GE (formerly Fanuc), Siemens, Modicon and their proprietary networks.
Experience with legacy systems from GE, Converteam, and other mill builders.
Previous experience with an automation systems provider or major vendor.
